Asle Jøssang is a Norwegian social anthropologist and photographer. His deep passion for photography not only stands on its own but also serves as an important tool in his research and communication work. In addition to Norway, Asle's professional experience includes extensive fieldwork in East Africa—specifically Kenya and Tanzania—as well as South America, in Peru and Bolivia.
Asle and his wife Marit spent several years as missionaries in South America. Both were born and raised in Tanzania (then known as Tanganyika). Their background and life experiences have resulted in collecting a wealth of unique and historical materials that by now have outgrown their private use and need to be shared with a wider audience. Young Tanzanians, for instance, often wonder what life looked like in their grandparents’ time, and fortunately, there is a substantial collection of documentation stored in boxes across homes in Europe and America. That’s why this website showcases a special section called the East Africa Archive, making historic photos—most of which were taken by Asle’s father Jon Jøssang—available to the public. Archive photos from Peru and Bolivia are also featured.
Asle has a particular love for analog photography. He owns and uses several cameras of various brands and formats, and he develops his own film. For digital work, he uses mostly Fujifilm equipment.
